A rather harsh assessment, especially considering since 1997 one
could add to the fax just by writing on it. Even Mac 10.5.7 doesn't
have that straightforward capability built in.
(It is possible on OS X via jumping through lots hoops, but much
simpler to just print it out then fax again, presuming one has a
scanner or other way to fax).
While rare, I've used these Newt wonders more than once.
