As has been said before, if the ibook lacks firewire then it is probably one of the ongiral tangerine / Blueberry machines with 3.2 gb hd and (IIRC) originally 32mb ram. you are going to have to max the ram to even think of running x, and even a minimal install will eat most of the hard drive space.
Maybe you would be best to keep it OS 9, so it remains relatively fast.
