I just received the Special Collector's Edition (Jan 2004) of
MacAddict, celebrating 20 years of the Mac. In their review of Mac
history, they list "the keepers" and "the stinkers". You've guessed it
... they labeled our green friend as a "stinker".

Entitled, "Newton 1993-1998" they write, " Newton was apple's first
attempt at a PDA. Main problem: Its handwriting recognition was
abysmal. So bad, in fact, that it was lampooned in Doonesbury --- and
in an episode of The Simpsons, the Newton misinterpreted 'beat up
Martin' as 'eat up Martha.' Newton signified the shortsightedness of
Apple's management, which pushed the device into the world before it
was ready. Had it waited until it fixed the Newton's problems, Apple
may have been at the forefront of the PDA market from the beginning."

They lumped the Newton with these other "stinkers": the Macintosh
Portable, Macintosh TV, PowerBook 5300, Pippin, 20th Anniversary
Macintosh, and the G4 Cube.
