I don't know that they completely failed... I was under the impression that
they got several vendors to pay up -- including licensing for Photoshop's GIF
saving, for example.

Plus I know of several products that stopped supporting GIF because of the
Unisys (threats of) lawsuits.

If anything close to that happens with this JPEG situation, it will affect
most of us in some way.
