Did you try leaving it without power for several days, then plug it into an AC adapter? And if that don't wake it up, press the reset button on the back? Sometimes pressing it while holding down the power switch does it as well. But it will ask you if you wish to clear the memory, say NO at that point unless you want to brain wipe it. Make sure you take out the flash cards before you do this.
By the way, when Sylvain says "risking your ROM data" when you swap a ROM board, I think it is meant the user data stored in flash RAM. The unless I am way off, the data in the ROM itself isn't cleared since that is Read Only Memory. But when you swap the ROM board from another Newton type (say a eMate) into a Newton 2x000 it will wipe all user data and system patches stored in FLASH memory.
