The OS puts short pulse on the internal port selector, but there is no
code that checks for a response. Scratching my head.

Here are some pictures of PCBman's SER-001 board. It looks like he is using
a transceiver chip between the mini-DIN port and internal header. On the
header the bottom 4 pins on the right are jumped together. The bottom two
on the right are connected to ground and the two above them are connected
together.
