I turn wifi off on my iPhone when I don't need it. That goes for bluetooth too. This does save battery life. I can get a whole day.
With wifi turned on, the iPhone will be seeking out hotspots every, about, 20 seconds.
Just a tip.
But with a tablet, there's lots more room for a battery. Let's take my MacBook Air. I get about 2.5 hours solid, heavy use off the battery. Not bad for something so incredibly thin and light.
