Re: [NTLK] Another Newton feature now available for the iPhone

I am a PC user. I have an XP box, A Mac G3 running OS9 and a box running
Ubuntu 8. I own several newtons from my poor broken 120 2.0 to a 2000UPG. I
also own a Nokia tablet. And I sit here responding to this email on my XP
box. Now that you know where I am coming from, here are a couple of facts.

1. Windows mobile is alive and well. Version 6.5 is coming out as 7.0 is
behind schedule. But, 6.0 works fine, 6.5 just has additional enhancements.
Nobody cares? The company I work for develops and sells software to the
alarm and security industry. One of our products is a remote unit for the
technician in the field. With it he can check the status of his tickets,
check inventory, update tickets, get a signature from the customer and get
directions to his next service call. All of this because a windows mobile
device can be programmed by my company and can be connected to the SQL
server back bone of our application.

2. We are opening a new line for our field service units. It will be based
on Microsoft tablet PC's. Why use tablets if the mobile platform is so good?
Because many service techs carry PC's already for programming alarm
equipment, so we are developing an application that they can use and not
have to carry a second device.

3. At our last user's conference we had several hardware vendors in showing
windows mobile devices. Some of them are amazingly powerful. We are even
looking at one that has a bar code reader as an inventory enhancement.

4. Windows mobile devices will never replace a Newton, they took a different
path. But on that path they are a viable product.

5. We have no plans to develop any applications for the iPhone, but both of
the owners of the company carry one.

So, can we stop comparing apples (no pun intended) to oranges and bashing
everything Microsoft does. Are they perfect? No, but neither is Apple or the
Linux community. Everybody hits a home run on occasion. Everybody strikes
out on occasion.

never touch a WinMob phone, but may, someday, be willing to buy an
iPhone.... or a Pre.... or an Android phone... but one phone I'll
never touch is a WinMob phone. WinMob is dying, and nobody cares any
more about it (not that they ever did...)
