You CAN view PDF, Word, text, JPGs, Excel spreadsheets, comma-separated databases, HTML, etc. on your Newton with the right software and by doing a bit of conversion. At least on 1.x. In Word, text, Excel spreadsheets, and comma-separated databases formats, you can also edit them. But yeah, it's not that easy.
