You'll actually want a later version of VirtualPC, since it'll have
all the latest speed-up hacks and such. However, I actually recommend
a program called Q. Q is an OS X port of the Linux emulation app
qemu. It'll emulate a wide range of applications and supports some
basic (very basic) compression techniques. In addition to being free,
and supporting a wider range of hardware (emulated, that is) than
VirtualPC, I find it's more efficient (as in your emulated system
will run faster).

Plenty of people do.

Well, thankfully new Macs eliminate that problem. Boot Camp even
supports (that abomination) Vista these days.
