A broken interconnect port is far from mint. Hopefully you can
return it.
I have had excellent luck with jksalesinc.com. I highly recommend them.
with regard to the battery pack and your Newton I would first make
sure all contacts are clean and present. Look inside the Newtons
battery silo and see if the neg. contact is present and use pencil
eraser to clean. also clean the pos. contact with the pencil
eraser. If the Newton reports that a battery is present then the
thermister contacts are probably ok but I would clean them also.
Clean all the contacts on the battery pack as well.
Reset the Newton.
If you can install packages, install Frank's Newttest <http://www.pda-
soft.de/newttest.html> or Avi's Backdrop for a more detailed report
of the charging process.
Still no luck
try resetting the newton several times with the battery in place and
the charger plugged in, this sometimes helps get a charge started.
try slapping the packs flat side on a hard surface, be careful not to
break off the cap. Some folks have reported success.
try "chilling" the pack in the freezer for 15 minutes (don't freeze),
this has worked for me.
Re-cell the pack, it is the best solution.
Good luck
