Apple NZ runs a FM Pro database on the web for stolen units. resellers use
it to check the serial number of suspicious machines against and to add new
numbers to as they are reported stolen. I bought a G4-1.25 secondhand
recently and then discovered it had been stolen 6 months prior. Because the
seller gave me his actual bank a/c number into which to deposit the money,
the police got him and it looks as if the insurance co will give us the G4.
Perhaps the map could offer something similar - a place for owners to enter
a number if it has been stolen from them, and a place where anyone can enter
a number and get back either a "yes it's in the stolen database, here is the
owner's contact details" or "no, no matching record found" kind of response.
Just a thought.
