It sounds like you have a dead power adapter that has never been charging the
battery in the first place.
Did you ever observe that the Newton was in a 'Charging' state (ie. via the
battery meter in Extras)? If not, either the adapter or part of the Newton's
power circuitry is broken.
Can you test the power adapter's output with a multimeter? If you get 7.5
volts out of it then I'd blame the Newton.
