For a start, you might want to download NewtTest from the software
section of the site in the signature and let us know what the
battery subtest shows.

Normally, yes. Provided it is recognized as a rechargeable battery
(which NewtTest will tell you). Further provided that the
temperature resistor is ok and properly connected to the battery
contacts (see http://www.pda-soft.de/mp2k_battery_pack.html for
which contacts it is connected to). Further provided that the
battery voltage is high enough for the Newton to start a charge
cycle.

This is true for all models older than the 2000 and 2100. The
latter two have the resistor mentioned above to tell the Newton
that a rechargeable pack is installed.
