Here's an update, just in case it is of use to anyone.

The seller said the same thing about the card: send it back. It turns
out that he had some bad information about the cards and their
Newton-compatibility. He offered a full refund plus shipping costs, or
a replacement *28MB* card.

No harm, no foul.
