Well it depends. If you only have one CF card and have it as one big
partition. I don't believe SBM can help in this case, unless you have
another CF card of the same size or at least a one that of the same size
of your used space on your current CF card. Or even a linear flash of
that size. You need space that is not on that main CF card as you have
to reformat and repartition.
Have you been using your CF card just for packages or both packages and
data? If you have only been using it for packages then I would suggest
backing it up (to be safe using either NCU or a flash card) writing down
all the packages that are on the CF card, then wiping the CF card,
repartition it, and then reinstall the packages. You can restore the
backup, a part at a time, if you want. But I think it is just as easy
to just install the packages since you are splitting it up to smaller
partitions (unless you can't find the original package that is).
Now if you used that CF card for both data and packages. How much data
is on the card? If it is not much then back it up with SBM and a linear
card or NCU (make sure you are not doing a incremental backup with
NCU.....always start with a new backup file by deleting or moving the
old one). Then after the backup delete the main CF partition and create
a new one that is big enough to hold your data, and restore just your
data. Now create partitions for your packages and restore them. You
can add packages to the data partition if you want as well. But
personally I would keep them separate. Easier to backup and keep things
straight. Packages are easy to reinstall, loosing data is not a option
though.

P.S. Backup, backup, then backup again. It can't hurt and it helps
insulate one from the phenomenon called "OOPS"
