Starting from the very beginning:
you can connect any serial GPS device that supports NMEA protocol or others
(depending on the software).
Also the use of a PCMCIA GPS receiver card is possible and supported from
several software:
the main point is that the card is representing itself like a serial
interface.
The GPSMap software manual mentiones the Centennial SatNav PCMCIA card that
is working.
It was reported on the list recently that even a CF GPS receiver (Haicom
Hi-303E) works with the Newt, but you need a CF to PCMCIA adapter.

Depending on what is you special application and intention how to use it,
the external variant or the internal PCMCI card might be your preferred
