Ah, but do they even fade away? Here's an interesting case study for you:

<><>
The first Newton I got was given to me by an old boss when I fixed his
stapler. The original original OMP, running good ol' (read: practically
unuseable) OS 1.05. The screen had pits in it where every close box
would appear, and thick stripes of scuffing where the common text entry
fields went. The battery case was thickly encrusted with blue-and-white
corrosion.

I replaced the batteries, chipped off the corrosion, and used daily for
both school and work. It was dropped on multiple occasions, ruining the
card eject lock, written on (accidentally) with pens and pencils, and
once disassembled completely, and reassembled wrong so that one of the
screws went *through* the case. (Ah, the good times I had playing
Bug-O-Matic on the back porch until the sun turned my screen back...)

All that said, it still functions as well as it ever did. The scuffs on
the screen don't disrupt the visibility of the screen too much. I never
lost a single bit of my information.

Newton: Built like a tank.
But smaller.
And less dangerous.
And the metaphor is starting to wear thin.
