Suggestion regarding the phone jack ...
You might want to take a modular phone line, cut off one end, and solder =
on miniature alligator clips.=20
This will allow you to pull the plate out of the wall, and clip onto the =
phone line wires directly.

I've routinely used my Powerbook to dial up in Europe with no=20
problems, although as someone else stated, you do need to turn off=20
dial tone detection (this is a simple click box in Mac OS; on a=20
Newton you may need to add the AT command, I've never tried it).
The one thing that makes life a little complicated is that in most of=20
Europe they don't use the same kind of phone line plugs (RJ11) that=20
we do in North America, so you need to get an adapter kit. But these=20
are widely available in the same sorts of places that carry travel=20
power converters. And some of the newer phones actually do have an=20
RJ11 plug on the phone end of the line (wall outlet is something=20
different), so you can just unplug the phone and plug the line into=20
your modem.
