The Newton is in no way proprietary, it had been licensed by many other
companies and was the first (usable) handheld platform on the market. It
paved the way for many other handhelds like the Palm, not to mention
that Graffiti was first developed as a replacement for the buggy
handwriting recognition system of the early Newton models. Later Palm
(then owned by 3Com) made it the default input system for their own
handhelds. ;-)
