Thank You everyone for tolerating my difficulties getting NCU to work.
What I found...
1. I have to unplug the USB to Serial adapter once booted for XP to see
it.
2. Then I have to use 1 slowdown.exe at the slowest setting.
3. NCU will only work when set to "Serial", not "Serial 9600 - Windows".
I just tried backing up the MP 120 and for the first time I got the menu
on the MP allowing me to select what to back-up, but when I did and ok'd
the selections - the MP restarted itself and then the laptop shut off
and re-started. So there is still some conflict going on at the kernel,
I Suspect.
Thanks again for everyone's help and patience, it's much appreciated!
Not to mention I get heckled by all of my friends for trying to use my
little green friends. Recently they've had a field day rippin' on me for
not even being able to connect for a sync/back-up/install. Next up,
Internet - then GPS. So, if anyone has that special PGS PC-Card that
they no longer need, please let me know - I'll buy it!
Regards,
Paul Curtis

Subject: Re: [NTLK] MP120 connecting - Thanks everyone for your
patience...
OK, I have now figured out how to get the serial port on the XP laptop
to work with the USB to Serial adapter from Belkin, it takes some
finagling, but I've figure that part out.
I think I've narrowed the issue down to NCU and Windows XP not playing
nice together. Specifically, I have examined the error file after NCU's
predictable crashing, and it points to these files as files of conflict:
ntdll.dll, kernel132.dll, MPR.dll, ADVAPI32.dll, RPCRT4.dll, USER32.dll,
and so on for a total of 26 .dll's. I have the actual last 2 crashes in
the text doc from XP, if anyone knows what to do with it?
Now, I have uninstalled the NCU and re-installed several time, with no
luck. Anybody have any ideas?
Regards,
Paul Curtis

OK, I can reliably and repeatedly connect the Laptop w/XP to my MP 120 -
YEAH.
I can install packages, but what I can't do is Backup my MP to the
Laptop. What happens is that the process begins and I get plenty of
traffic showing on the Belkin for both TX & RX for about 3 seconds, but
then the process fails, the error from the MP says that there was a
communication error (-1), then NCU crashes as soon as I try to
manipulate it and ties up the Comm port. I have done this with and
without Slowdown.exe and I have connected with both Serial and Serial
9600 - Windows.
--------------------------
I used to have the same problems with my MP2100 & I froze all my
packages before backing up & select back up from the Newton & then you
can select robot yow want backed up like internal & card pkgs. etc.. I
just backed up my 8mb card with no issues! sent with a Newton Message
