The American public and press have become very flighty and short of
patience. If the people who want instantaneous success could get past their
childish behavior, a whole lot of good products might have a chance.
As it stands, only those products that are marketed with ruthless
agressivness by a stubborn CEO, survive, not necessarily the truly good or
promising products. So, when the Newton PDA started getting flack from the
crowd whose opinion Steve Jobs was concerned about, he killed it. Compare
this with Bill Gates who bought an unfinished product that didn't
completely work - DOS - and sold it to IBM. He has followed this strategy
with brilliant success on a wide range of mediocre products.
So, I would submit that the Newton Message Pad was not a bad, stinker
product. I would suggest that the man in charge failed to grasp an
opportunity and run with it. My speculation is just a valid as those who
would cast aspersions on the Newton since we will probably not know what
could have been done had Mr. Jobs had the courage to go forward instead of
caving in.
What has been done by the people on this list indicates only a small
portion of the true potential of this wonderful little platform. Quite
frankly, the Newton OS is one of the most remarkable that has ever been
created. No other OS ties everything together so beautifully and seems to
be so stable.
