Re: [NTLK] my Newt just experienced a hiccup of the most painful variety

First, I want to give a big thank you to you Eckhart and Paul for
addressing this.

I am going to describe again exactly what happened:

1) Courier 0.5 was running from a 6Mb linear flash card. One day Courier
decided that it did not have enough memory to run and forced me to
restart. Everytime thereafter When I tried to run Courier I was given
that message. So I tried deleting some minor apps on my Newt. This
allowed me to at least open Courier without the restart message, but I
still couldn't go to anywhere with it, and when I tried emptying the
cache, I got the -10606 error. So I deleted Courier.

2) I then went to Trashpak and tried to delete Courier's prefs. There
were 2 files listed and while one was deleted quite easily, the other
would not go away. Everytime I tried to delete it the slip would come up
that it doulc not be deleted and would freeze up Trashpak. Most of the
time I could close TP at the X but sometimes I would need to soft reset.

3) I realized I had some major problems brewing and needed to back up
and quickly. First, I took everything off the linear card. All my Notes,
Works, and PocketQuicken files on it were moved to the ATA card, most
everything else was deleted. Now I had nothing visible on the linear
card, but I only had 3.5Mb on a 6Mb card, so I knew something else was
on the card. I went into Prefs Cleaner and found a 2.5Mb prefs file from
Courier as the lone thing on that card. It could not be deleted, so I
reformatted the card. Now I thought my problems were solved, but they
were only just beginning.

4) I tried to now backup my Newt with the ATA card installed. I had
three partitions on the card: 4Mb, 2 x 62Mb. On the 4Mb I had tranferred
my apps from the linear (not any Courier or its associated files). On
the first 62Mb partition, i had Modplayer and many mod files. On the
second 62Mb partition i had all of my data for PQ, Notes, Works. The
backup failed citing something like -48xxx. Tried that a couple of
times, then unmounted the ATA card (still kicking myself on this one).
My Newt restarted on its own and when it came back up, and it was
mounting the CF card, it got stuck on the first app on the card. The
first app was Adam Tows Alarm Clock. Ok, so now I couldn't get it
mounted at all. I am going crazy and I know that my Newt is very sick. I
adjusted the ATA prefs to allow for mounting witout activation and
deleted the offending app. Finally got the card to mount, that is, the
first two partitions mounted, but the third would not. To make a very
long story short, I had to brainwipe my Newt and reformat all of my cards.

I tell ya, part of me wants to get rid of this brick, but considering
the small fortune I have spent on it, most recently a new CF card and a
full version of ATA makes me reconsider. That, and the fact that it
still is the best most usable PDA on or off the market. I don't hold
Paul or Eckhart responsible for my small tragedy, but I have experienced
the worst aspects of their otherwise woonderful software. My advice to
everyone: Back up often, and don't put all of your data in one place.

Thanks again for the interest in my problem Paul & Eckhart.

-Nate

PS. I was using all of the latest versions of Courier and associated
files and ATA 1.0r6.1.
