The original Newton modem, often called the cigarette pack modem since its
size and shape resembled a pack of cigarettes, was a 9600 baud external
modem that plugged in to the serial port. I see no reason why this would not
work. You may need to experiment with some settings, but as long as it is a
Hayes compatible instruction set, eventually it should work.

We trained hard- but it seemed that every time we began to form up into
teams, we would be reorganized. I was to learn later in life that we tend to
meet any new situation by reorganizing- and a wonderful method it can be for
creating the illusion of progress while producing confusion, inefficiency,
and demoralization.
