It is not.
And my GPS works fine with the SER-001.
If you consider the serial interface from the outside world to the Newt from
a purely electrical point of view there is really no difference between
SER-001 and the interconnect port with dongle.
AFAIK there is not a single case where the SER-001 was proven not to work.
So this rather seems to be a contact problem.
