Hi Ron,
the modem is the solution to your questions. You can plug the power
adapter into it, and it powers the Newton (it has a serial and a
power plug which plug into the Newton simultaneously). The modem also
serves as the connection between the Newton and the phone. The big
round button powers up the Newton.
