I think I will give up using the Newton Works Converter.
I assumed that it would be needed to import non-Newton Works files into
the Newt i.e. save file in suitable format (RTF), use the converter to
convert to NW format, use import NW function in NCU to transfer to the
Newt.
I have found that all you need to do is use NCU. Any WP doc saved in a
suitable format i.e. Word 4 or 5, will be automatically coverted upon
import.
Thanks for all your suggestions.

Do the translators show up in the Open file dialog box when you click in
the
"Import" button? If not, then this would be your problem. There should be a
"Claris" folder inside the System folder. Inside that should be another
folder with the translators. To the best of my knowledge, the only one that
works with NCU is the RTF. It's the only one that shows up in my NCU.
