Microsoft invented RTF, so it should hardly be surprising that MS Word
knows how to deal with it.
Anyway, the culprit is the Newton's Notes app. Umlauts, like any
characters outside the 7-bit ASCII range, should be properly encoded, as
RTF is a 7-bit format. Newt Works does this quite nicely, but Notes
merely passes the umlauts unchanged. While MS Word is more forgiving,
Apple Works ignores these characters that, according to the RTF
specification, shouldn't really be there.
