I think the problem with the umlauts is that you are dealing with Unicode.
My guess is that Word handles the Unicode better than AW does.
Unfortunately, on the Mac, Word is currently about your only option for
dealing with Unicode in a manner anywhere near approaching decently. (Not
one decent, elegant solution yet) I'm guessing that TextEdit doesn't do any
graphics, which is why those are missing, or at least it doesn't handle
graphics in rtf files. Do you have Nisus Writer? Try downloading the latest
demo and see if it does a better job. They keep trying to improve their rtf
support, but it is iffy at best.
