Crap. Goods are priced by their maker in the coin of the realm they occupy.
Are you prepared to have a bunch of people tell you, personally, what you
can charge for your efforts ? More specifically, a bunch of people who will
DIRECTLY benefit from your labors ?
If an author wants to charge what seems exorbitant to you it is his right,
and his problem. If you don't like an authors policies, then do not support
them. Period.
Maybe they have dependants to support ? Maybe they had to pay some
licensing fees just to create the software ? Who knows ... who cares.
I am making NO moral judgements upon either those who are without means to
purchase, or those who find ways around same in this reply.
As to the US $ - why don't you tell that to either the world financial
institutions or your local black market.
