Well, that part about sending mail isn't strictly true. You just can't use
*their* SMTP server to send mail. But, you might be able to find another
one. Especially if, for example, you regularly visit certain workplaces,
you may be able to get them to let you send mail using their local SMTP
server.

I've been doing this at work for a couple of years now... I get mail from my
provider's POP3 server, but I can't access their SMTP server, so I send
through my employer's SMTP server.
