Not sure what you mean by "software switch"?

This is pretty much impossible for "normal" people because you won't
be able to get it out without destroying the display unit. (Please
feel free, everybody, to prove me wrong, in this case I'd love to
stand corrected).

I'd suggest you stop crying for now and, after doing a full backup,
follow the advice for resetting that is given at
http://www.pda-soft.de.130_disassemble.html.
By "follow" I mean "follow exactly"!!
It doesn't hurt to do a full backup before.
If that doesn't help, let us know.
