Not quite true.
A few months ago I requested a general NE2000 driver, and the result was
that Paul Guyot prepared a driver as well as a PCMCIA "get-info" program
that will make him able to update the driver for new NE2000 cards.
I contributed with two cards, one of them is indeed a SMC card, allthough
I'm not sure wether it also is knows as "EliteCard" or not.
since then I have stumbled across a couple of other NE2000 cards as well
(students with laptops) but never had the newton around to get the nifo
from them.
So, anyone who got a cheap 10Mbit ethernet card, it is very likely a NE2000
card (exceptions: farallon and 3com) and driver can be buildt for it.
