Hi Jim,
There are people more knowledgeable about this than myself... and I know
they will correct me if I am wrong, but...
Communication with the desktop is provided through the desktop integration
libraries (DIL's). Unfortunately, the DIL's rely on technology that has not
been ported to OSX from Classic. Hence, unless someone wants to recreate the
protocols from scratch, we're stuck with Classic.
The good news: Paul Guyot was working on this. (Technically, he's working on
new DIL's for a different platform but they can be repurposed for OSX.) The
bad news: Paul is very overworked and I wouldn't expect anything in the
immediate future.
