David, please help clarify how you have this
configured. From what you have given, I am assuming
this:
This is the settings on the Newton:
> Ethernet

> Card: 3Com 3C589 PC card
> Subnet Mask: 255:255:255:0
> Local IP: 90.0.0.5
> Gateway/Router Address: 90.0.0.1
> Primary DNS: 90.0.0.1
> Domain name : DEEP_THOUGHT

This is the settings on the PC:
> Dock to DEEP_THOUGHT
> Address 90.0.0.1
> Port 80

What application are you using on the Newton to
establish the connection to the PC?

Additionally, this bit is puzzling as well:
> On the PC:
>
> Hyperterminal is set to listen on 90.0.0.5 port 80

If you have Hyperterminal set to listen on the IP
90.0.0.5, then that means that the IP 90.0.0.5 must be
on your PC. But you state earlier that your Newton is
set to communicate on that IP.

I don't use Hyperterm much, but my understanding is
that communications on a "server" must be set to the
IP of that server. In this case, you list the IP
90.0.0.1 as the IP for the PC. So, you must set the
Hyperterm to listen on that IP for port 80 in order to
be effective.

Also, I think that the protocal that Hyperterm talks
with requires a VT100 compatible client. This means
you need terminal emulator software on the Newt in
order to establish a connection to Hyperterm (but
again, I don't use hyperterm and I'm not too sure that
hyperterm can act as a server... and I know you can't
talk client to client...

Ultimatly, you need some server software (BBS software
or something similar) on the PC that is listening on
the IP that is local to that PC (bear in mind, you are
not limited to that single IP on your PC! You can put
any number of IPs on your machine as long as your
subnet mask reflect the correct IP block (CIDR) <my
server in front of me has over 25 IPs!>
Then with some sort of client software on the Newt
(PT100) you would establish a connection to the
server.

At least, that's what makes sense to me...
