Personally, like THX1138, I prefer 7.5.5 over 7.6 on computers with 040
CPU's.
BTW, I run 7.6.1 when using that version.
Whatever you do, do not run system 8.0 on your LC575. If you want to use
system 8, use version 8.1. Someone else on the list suggested version
8.0. Version 8.0 has some bugs with 040 machines. I used to run my
840av as a server with no problems with either 7.5.5, 7.61 or 8.1.
I finally opted for 7.5.5 since the system is the smallest and you can
remove many extensions and control panels reducing the installed size and
it will still work fine. I used it as my print server as well using the
LaserWriter Bridge control panel. I ran it 24/7 for about a year without
a hitch before retiring the system.
BTW, I tried to get 8.0 to run on my Q840av. The Finder was not happy.
I finally gave up and went to 8.1.
The LC575 is fine for installing packages and backing up your Newt via
serial.
If you want to use Ethernet, then the LC575 would need to be upgraded to
have Ethernet capability. It has a Comm 1 Slot. I believe that you can
put a Comm 1 Slot Ethernet (10 Base-T) card in it. I have a TAM which
uses the Comm 2 Slot card. Uses a different card. Mine works fine.
If you choose to use Ethernet and want to use your Q700, then you will
need to add an adapter. The adapter, Apple model M0437, is called an,
"Ethernet Twisted-Pair Transceiver".
The Q700 comes with an AAUI-15 Ethernet port. You can't plug in the
standard CatV/RJ connector. So you need one of these adapters. I opted
for the Apple version since I did not want any compatability problems.
Mine works fine. I've heard/read where others have had troubles with
third party adapters.
As for the serial adapter, I haven't use one with the Newt. With my Palm
Pilot, I could sync and install prc's (their packages) just fine.
I have not tried the serial adapter with my iMac to see if it works or
not. After going to Ethernet, I will not go back to serial. Ethernet
sure spoils a person! And it is so easy with the Newt 2100.
