Frankly I'd get a serial to USB adapter and use it
with your iMac and iBook, if these are your primary
computers. I don't see the point in using it with
older computers if you can easily use it with your
main ones. I use a serial to USB adapter with my G4
under the classic environment of OSX.1 without any
problems. I also connect through Ethernet when I feel
like hooking the power adapter up to it.
With you L575, I think you can run up to OS8.1 on the
'040 processor. I would personally use OS 8 or 8.1,
since I think they're much more stable and I like the
more modern Mac OS features. The Quadra 700 is in the
same boat.
I love vintage Macs (I've had several, right now it's
down to my G4, MP2100, and an SE30), but to really get
daily use out of my 2100, I need to use it with my G4.
