I have both an eMate (my first Newton device) and an MP2100. I have NIE and
PT100 (telnet program) in the eMate, and a few other small apps, but I
mainly used it as a telnet terminal. I've used less than 2Mb of the
internal store. I use an ethernet card with NIE, and I think having just
one PCMCIA slot is a real big handicap to the eMate (that, and the slow
processor). You can probably use it for what you want, with or without the
upgrade, though it will be a bit of a tight squeeze.
If you can find one that has been upgraded, then it will work better. Not
great, but better. I don't want to admit how much I paid for the upgrade
card, but I was very dissapointed in it's performance. In my opinion, the
extra DRAM and the increase to 32bit operation had very little noticable
effect. The only noticable improvement was the extra 2megs of Flash memory.
Which still pales in comparison to what you can do with a PCMCIA card in the
second slot of an MP2x00.
So, for the money, I would strongly suggest an MP2x00 and a keyboard. Even
for the extra price, it's going to be that much more useful. I rarely use
my eMate these days (though I'll hang on to it because it looks cool). The
MP2100 does everything for me, it's a lot more portable, and more capable.
As for the eMate's ROM, it has NOS 2.1, all the regular built-in
applications in common with the other 2.1 devices, and the addition of
NewtWorks (which takes about 150-160k of Flash on my MP2100).
