Right, it's an "inverter" needed to produce the high voltage AC for the EL
backlight. It's possible (and I might attempt) to put one in that is more
recent and hopefully more efficient.

I doubt the Newton runs of linear regulators, those are too inefficient.
When I do open mine, I'll post all the hardware info I can find.
