Who knows, maybe if would be good if ole SJ saw what we are trying to do
as a community.
The pen computing platform war is far from over. Right now the Palm OS
has 75% of the market, the Pocket PC 20%, and others for the rest.
Depending on which statistics that you use.
Two things are noteworthy:
1. The market is just getting started. By all accounts that I've seen
and/or read, this market segment is supposed to grow considerably in the
future. So unless the Palm and Pocket PC OS continue to dominate, we
could see an entirely new OS down the road. Don't laugh. Palm did it
before and took everyone by surprise.
2. Right now, to some, the Palm OS is getting long in the tooth while
the Pocket PC is getting ready for prime time. We could see a dramatic
shift in market share in the near future.

In a nutshell, I think it all depends on whether the market wants devices
that do a few things very well that are inexpensive, small and easy to
carry. Or, if the market wants more robust devices that include
everything but the kitchen sink, but are more expensive, bigger and not
as convenient to carry. Of course with technology, the size, weight,
cost and capability issues are changing all the time.
What I find really interesting, is that the latest crop of PocketPC
devices use the same CPU that the Newt 2K devices use. Let's see, when
did the MP2000 get introduced? Was that 1996 or 1997? Anyhow, if it was
1997, it has only took the PC community to get where we were almost 5
years ago.
With the introduction of the Tablet PC by BG, which is supposed to be how
folks are supposed to work, the tablet PC is now legitimized. Don't ya
just love it?! ;-)
Almost makes me want to puke when I hear BG spouting this stuff. :-(
But I digress. One of the beauties of the Newt OS is that is was
scalable to different sized devices from the start. Around when Apple
introduced the Newt 2000 series, they had versions (including prototypes
from what I understand, but can't confirm), of various sized Newts from
Palm Pilot size to full tablet size.
Now imagine if Apple would their own Tablet PC lineup incorporating Newt
like features including the best handwriting recognition that there is.
A speed bump would only make the handwriting better.
Of course there would be different sized Tablet PC's...to suit one's
needs.
You know, when I used my Palm OS device a while back, I almost always had
to carry other paper such as ToDo lists, calendar, notes, and such. Now
with the Newt, that is all that I need to carry. Apple had the right
concept many years ago. You have one OS that can run on different sized
devices, then you carry the one that suits your needs. Who knows, one
might even purchase more than one for different purposes.
I am so glad that I am back in the Newt community. I had forgotten how
effective the Newt really is. Recently, I've had a few folks at work
seriously inquire as to how to get a Newt. They have been noticing me
and my Newt at meetings and were tired of the small screen and Graffiti
on the Palm devices.
So yes, I hope ole SJ sees this list. I hope he gets fired up with what
is going on here.
The future of pen computing is far from over.
Who knows, there just might be enough space for an Apple Tablet PC in the
future...the Newton successor...I want one.
But for right now, I will happily keep using my wonderful Newts! :-)
