The cards are essentially the same, but apparently the Farallon software looks for an actual Farallon card. I've tried and was unable to come up with Mac drivers for any of the 3Com/USR ethernet cards I have. There were some, apparently, but 3Com denies any knowledge of them.
I got Farallon cards for my 5300 and my Newt and have been happy with them.
