Slowdown.exe is for WinTel boxes only, won't do you any good on a Mac.
You could try the following, increase the memory of NCU,
(command-i shortcut when the app is selected) trash NUU's prefs in your
system folder, restart you Newt with all extensions off (hold your pen on
the screen 1/2 inch from the left while starting up) and see if the problem
persists.
