According to the Newton FAQ (http://www.info-newt.com/faq/) there was a
program called NewtCQ in developmend by Justin Streufert a while back, but
I don't think anyone's heard from him in a while. More recently, Eric
Schenck (eschenck@mindspring.com) was exploring the possibility of writing
an ICQ or AIM client. Last I talked to him he was still evaluating the
feasibility of such a project.

Well, IM isn't any good unless you're hooked up to the internet, and the
vast majority of Newton users do this either with standard modems or
Ethernet. It would probably be most useful for those that use cell modems
with their newtons regularly, and I believe this is only a small portion
of the community.
OTOH, it would eb really cool for the rest of us :)
