I'm putting the +ve lead of the voltmeter on the +ve contact on the battery
and doing the same with the
-ve lead/contact. Nothing fancy. I'm not sure why you're getting significant
voltage on dead batteries. Have you tried a different voltmeter? Perhaps
yours is malfunctioning (just a thought).
